"Stories are a different kind of true."

Emma Donoghue, Room
Drawing of Mrs. Cameron and her cats, created as a gift by two of her Grade 12 practicum students.

WELCOME

My name is Amanda Cameron (known by my students as Mrs. Cameron), and I am a teacher. This website represents my year-long journey in UBC's Bachelor of Education program.

The quote above is from Donoghue's novel Room, which is one of my favourite novels. I chose it because it captures a major element of why I am so passionate about literature: how stories capture truths about our experiences as human beings.

This young spoken word poet from New York first came to my attention when her TED performance was shown during one of my classes. I was lucky enough to see her perform her poem Shosholoza live this spring when she was participating in Amanda Palmer's NinjaTED Vancouver event. She is a truly inspiring young author and performer, and my students have also found her poetry engaging and inspiring.
